Koh Ta Kiev

Koh Ta Kiev

After two miles of walking on the beach, from Ostres beach, we finally arrived to the boat that would take us away from Sihanoukville. It's a kind of big boat with a wooden hull, painted blue, and two good engines in order to get through the open water waves.

We drop our backpacks, food, ice to keep the drinks fresh, and all kinds of other goods in the bottom of the boat. We have to bring a lot, otherwise the only three guesthouses of Koh Ta Kiev would live in complete autarky! So, they fill their stocks thanks to every new clients who arrive on the island!

At a moderate speed, we go off the coast and leave Sihanoukville bay. We get crazy! We enjoy the wind on our faces while keeping an eye on our bags: the water starts to fill the bottom of the hull. At every wave we pass through, we find ourselves a bit more wet. Everyone laugh when Ludo, a friend of the guys, receive a huge amount of water in the face. But this man is pretty robust: the cigarette is still standing in-between his lips!

Finally, we enjoy a lot of this crossing, where we see calm turquoise waters mix to the darker ones. Every island we see make us think it is our dropping-off point, and that we are going to land. But no! Having a look at our two Cambodians navigators, sleeping alongside the noisy engines, is actually enough to understand that our destination is still further.

From a lively conversations at the beginning we went to a silent and meditative state after some time. The sea spray and reflecting sun on the water make us fall asleep, our eyes are drowsy.

THAT'S IT!

Finally! We see our island and beach: 'THE LAST POINT'. What a dreamy name, and this seems actually paradise. Once on the sand, we confirm!

Of course, you must put the island in parallel of the guest-house, which is far from our expectations: people are living the lost island dream by being stoned h24. Which makes them unable to prepare our bungalow after several requests, and this until 11pm! (hater haha). Fortunately, in the meantime, we decide to go swimming further on the beach, in a water even warmer than previously in Sihanoukville! Really nobody wants to get out!

Then, on the evening, we head to the other island side, to enjoy another beach and guest-house: 'Plankton beach'. After a nice drink on the sand, we savour some food prepared by a French Chef, we love it!

'By the way guys, do you know why 'the Plankton Beach' has this name?'

'No?'

'Because there is bio-luminescent plankton in the water, and you can see it by night!'

'WOOOOOH, fucking nice, we have to try it!'

That's how, we are all running on the beach, like jerks at 10pm. We caress, shake, hit, fight the water to see if some semblance of light in water appears, but it does not matter how we do it, the plankton is not present... Until we move off from the guesthouse lights! I see a kind of blue particle, I scream! Everyone joins me. The more we go away in the darkness, the more we realize that they are plenty! We play like kids, it's just a crazy thing!

Every one of us gets in their underwear to go swimming in this water which looks totally black. However, as we go further in the sea, real blue auras surround us, it is incredible! Everyone returns in childhood, it's Christmas and magic! We jump, dive and dance more, to create waves and make the plankton react. Above us, stars are here by hundreds: we can guess the Milky Way. It must be said, it's because we are far from any city, or strong source of light. We feel like explorers on the other side of the world.

We found THE place, THE timing!

Bamboo guest-house on the beach
